Grip Wax, or kick wax, is used on touring and classical cross country skis to provide grip during the kick phase of classical diagonal stride ski technique. This type of grip wax is considered "hard" as opposed to a klister, paste or spray, and it comes in 60 gram canisters. It is used when skiing in new, or crystalline snow, which is snow that has not been melted and refrozen.
Tips for applying Grip Wax to a cross country ski:
For the best results and durability of grip wax, a base wax should be ironed into the kick zone of your ski as a foundational layer. After that is cooled and corked in, thin layers of grip wax that are suited for the daily conditions are applied.
Grip wax is rubbed (thinly) onto the ski base and smoothed out with a natural or synthetic cork.
It is best applied using multiple thin layers, as opposed to one thick layer.
If the temperature is between two different waxes, start with the colder of the two and work towards the warmer one if needed. Snow will stick heavily to a grip wax that is too warm.
Skiers tend to prefer synthetic corks on the trail because they can generate heat easier in cold temperatures or when using the colder/harder grip waxes.
Natural corks have a nice feel while spreading the wax and come in handy when corking softer waxes or waxing indoors.
Extra wax, a scraper and a cork should be carried with you on the trail to make adjustments.
