VIDEO – “Applying Soft Glide Wax to XC Skis”

“Hi, this is Doug from NordicSkiSource.com. This video is applying a soft glide wax to the ski. ********* Before you start any wax job you need to make sure the base of your ski is clean. For this I am using a fine steel brush made by Swix, which is very helpful for moving a lot of debris and old wax out of your bases. (Doug brushes out the base of the ski 3-4 swipes)*********

We are going to crayon on the wax, completely covering the base so there will not be any potential damage to the base of your ski. First, I am going to rub a little bit of the wax directly onto the iron, so that we are not putting a hot iron right onto our ski.
(Doug quickly rubs the block of wax directly onto the heated iron, then crayons the wax block onto the ski)

We are also warming up the wax so we can wipe it on the base. As you can see, I’m working from tip to tail and we will go completely down the ski in this fashion. By warming up the wax we are able to put on a lot more than we would be able to if we were using cold wax.

(Doug continues to wax down the ski) After we get the wax completely crayoned on this way, we will come in and do the groove. If you feel like you are not getting enough wax on the ski, you can heat up your iron a little more. Next, I am going to wax the center groove (Doug is taking the tip of the wax block to get inside the center groove, while following the same practice of rubbing the wax onto the iron first). (**Narration**) (Doug irons slowly from tip to tail in one motion, going over the base twice). (Doug irons inside the groove, focusing on one side from tip to tail, then the other side from tip to tail)

From audio text: Once we get the groove waxed, we’re ready to iron. We’re going to start with one steady consistent pass from tip to tail. And notice that we are not putting any pressure on the iron; instead we’re basically guiding it all the way down the iron and putting slight pressure on the rear of the iron to spread the wax. Next we’ll be ready to iron both sides of the groove.

Once the groove is complete, we’ll do 2-3 more passes down the length of the ski. The more wax we get into the base the greater our durability will be for the wax application. Once the passes are done, we’ll allow the ski to cool completely at room temperature and then we’ll be ready to scrape!
